Cathwaer

Cathwaer 4mm OO9

Cathwaer is based on the fictitious Heymore Light Railway (HLR) which set in the Derwent Valley of present-day North Derbyshire.

This weekend, the layout is set during the railway’s 60th Anniversary Spring Steam Gala which occurred on May 18th & 19th 2024. This event sees 2 visiting locomotives and at least 5 of the railway’s resident locomotives.

Cathwaer Station was built in 1870. It was demoted to a request stop in 1904 and Cathwaer closed with the railway in 1955. The HLR was preserved in 1960 and ran their first trains in 1964 which terminated at Heymore. Even though Cathwaer was preserved and was given much needed TLC, it was decided not to reopen the station. The station was reopened in 1970 during the railway’s Centenary gala. Cathwaer gained a car park some point in the 1990s however the car park is owned by the National Trust but can still be used for the station.

The station gets its name from a local (and fictitious) lake which is a popular tourist attraction during the summer months especially July & August. The station is a popular site for railway enthusiasts and photographers.
