Layout Overview
“Over the Fence” is a highly detailed, minimum-space O gauge micro-layout that proves the substantial presence of 7mm scale modelling can easily thrive in a compact footprint. Contained within an illuminated display box, the layout packs maximum atmosphere into a scenic footprint measuring just 42 by 14 inches. The layout represents a forgotten corner of a British Rail industrial backwater during the 1980s transition era or can even be run as a steam era scene with a few modifications. It provides the perfect stage for hard-working diesel or steam shunters to go about their daily tasks.
Scenery & Design Theme: The dominant backdrop features a row of brick engineering workshops and warehouses, capturing a scene of post-industrial Britain. The layout gets its name from the prominent boundary fencing slicing across the foreground. This architectural feature creates a striking split-perspective, forcing viewers to peer over the brick walls and weathered timber fences right into the active railway corridor. Overgrown foliage, scattered workshop debris, and fine ground texturing help ground the compact scene in realistic detail.
Operation & Sector Plate: Despite its modest size, the layout offers prototypical and engaging operation. Train movements are driven entirely by a 36 by 14-inch sector plate hidden at the layout’s end. This pivoted, multi-track staging plate acts as a space-saving fiddle yard, swinging precisely to line up different tracks and feed incoming and outgoing rolling stock directly onto the 42-inch scenic section.
Motive power consists of characterful 1980s-era small diesels—such as the ubiquitous Class 08 shunter or BR steam locos —fitted with full DCC digital sound to bring the scene to life. Rolling stock is a curated mix of short-wheelbase freight stock and industrial wagons, moving individually or in small rakes via low-speed shunting manoeuvres.
