Studio Tour

Studio Tour. 4mm/OO & OO9

I’m a huge fan of the Harry Potter series of books and movies so my modelling journey started after receiving the Hogwarts Express train set for Christmas 2019 from my husband.  Little did he know that he had opened a magical can of worms! I decided that I wanted to build my first model railway layout so that the loco could have a better and more fitting place to run.  This had to be something different to the usual layouts appearing at exhibitions and so the planning for the Studio Tour commenced.

By creating my version of a Studio Tour it meant that I could fit in lots of props from the movies to create lots of interesting detail – see how many you can find.  As you look round the layout, most things have been built offset and crooked, just like in the movies.  This was no mean feat for someone that is a bit OCD!!

My husband was a great help and built the wooden frame and laid the track for me.  As an engineer he helped to make things work when I needed the support and his 3D modelling skills helped produce some of the tiny details.

Designing and building the layout appealed to my creative side and I had to learn how to solder, use hot wires and other skills that I didn’t have.  It was a journey of celebrations and frustrations.  But together we achieved what we set out to do.

I’m hoping that even if you are not a wizarding fan, then you can appreciate the work involved in creating it and just admire it for the detailing. To be 100% sure I made contact with Warner Bros, who said that as long as I don’t say the layout has anything to do with JK Rowling or themselves then I’m fine to exhibit the Studio Tour.  I hereby confirm that the Studio Tour layout has no affiliation with Warner Bros or JK Rowling.
