The Electric Tramway

This 00 Gauge demonstration piece illustrates the development of transfer systems used to supply electricity to tram cars. Many of the early tramways used simple stud or conduit systems to power their cars. This relied on the power being supplied at road level, which could easily become damaged or even dangerous to other road users. These inherent problems soon resulted in most systems adopting the now familiar overhead power cables with trolley pole, bow collector or pantograph power collection from cables hung high above the road.

The trams on view are mainly kit built and of English prototypes.
